Looking at the lab results that were given back to me and seeing so much of the health effects be related to organ toxicity and cognitive disfunction, I would be sadden to know that I was, and still am, unknowingly exposing myself to toxic chemicals. Learning about the possibility of having problems conceiving due to the presences of DDT and Phthalates would be devastating, especially if it were discovered during the conceiving period. Just recently I had a conversation with a client discussing the multitude of women having trouble conceiving and how this issue does not seem to be only about the health of their uterus or the age at which they are trying. I feel as I learn more about these toxic chemicals and the combination of varying birth controls has affected our ability to conceive naturally. Of course conditions such as Polycystic ovary Syndrome (PCOS) is one of the reasons many woman resort to IVF, but could the toxicity levels due to chemical exposure over a long period be part of the reason In-vitro Fertilization (IVF) is on the rise?

Hey Aika,
ReplyDeleteYou raised a great question in concerns of women going through IVF at a higher rate. The toxic chemicals we are exposed to on a daily basis have to be a major factor. Hormonal changes in anyone can be detrimental let alone a woman in her critical stages of pregnancy. I too have been really aware of chemical exposure after our last class.
I feel like that is so real, I think there are also a lot of layers to seeing this issue. Like women are having kids later, IVF just became a more commercialized and viable option in the last 20 years, information is more readily available to expose women doing this, but I think the insidious chemicals are definitely a major causal factor.
ReplyDeleteHey Aika! You have a great point that women are encountering various reproductive health concerns that can likely be linked to environmental health exposures. I've been wondering about some of the effects that my own products have on my health too.
